Orientation for new Direct Service Workers

Every Direct Service Worker must complete orientation within 30 days of hire and before working alone with individuals. Orientation covers your agency, the people served, individual rights, confidentiality, safety, and reporting obligations — and completion must be documented.

The 24-hour annual training requirement

Under 55 Pa. Code § 6400.52, Direct Service Workers complete 24 hours of annual training related to their job skills and knowledge. The hours must address real competencies, including:

  • Person-centered practices, community integration, and individual choice
  • The individual's assessed needs and support plan
  • Incident and risk management, and reporting through EIM
  • Fire safety — provided annually by a fire safety expert
  • Medication administration, where the worker administers medications
  • Health and safety topics relevant to the people supported
